Biology + chemistry + physics = life
Scientists have developed an engineering discipline to create, control and program cellular behavior. Synthetic biology is used to revolutionize agriculture, energy production, water filtration and a variety of resource-intensive industrial processes. According to Craig Venter, a biotechnologist and entrepreneur and founder of Synthetic Genomics, "The big issues facing humanity can be solved with biology". Synthetic biology is used to design microbes that efficiently gobble up carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane to produce chemicals, turning emissions from industrial processes into revenue streams.
An example of Synthetic biology being utilized is with DuPont. Dupont and Goodyear Tire & Rubber, is developing a reliable, high-efficiency, fermentation based process for the Biolsoprene monomer, which is a good substitute from rubber.
